DGV Weekly — July 31, 2026

Microsoft's biggest gaming layoff round in years collides with a record quarter for gaming M&A, Saudi PIF deepens its bets on EA and Turkish studio Loom Games, Unity leapfrogs Unreal Engine 6, and Pakistan's CEGA keeps building out its investor and animation-meetup pipeline.

Lead story: Xbox's historic layoff round, against a backdrop of record M&A

Earlier this month Microsoft cut roughly 3,200 jobs from its Xbox division and moved to close or place under review five studios — Ninja Theory, Double Fine, Compulsion Games and Undead Labs — with Arkane Lyon's superhero title "Blade" reportedly cancelled outright. Industry watchers are calling it one of the largest single layoff events in games-industry history. (TechTimes, GamingBible)

The timing is notable: it lands in the same quarter that global gaming funding hit a 12-month high. Gaming financing topped $2.5B across 96 disclosed private rounds in Q2 2026 — the strongest quarter in a year — while M&A activity reached $2.3B across 54 announced and completed deals, the highest level since 2022. (MarketScale) The split picture — platform holders cutting headcount while capital keeps flowing into AdTech, AI tooling and hardware bets — is the industry's defining tension this summer: money is moving, but not evenly, and traditional console-studio headcount is bearing the brunt.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma publicly addressed the hardware and content revenue declines this week, saying leadership remains confident in the platform's direction despite the pressure — and despite reports that Xbox is losing roughly $150 on every console it sells. (GameRant, Instant Gaming) A community-run charity bundle of 100 PC games for $10 has since launched specifically to support developers affected by the wave of layoffs. (GameRant)

🇵🇰 At home

CEGA (Center of Excellence in Gaming & Animation) continues to be the most active node in Pakistan's gaming ecosystem this week. Its events calendar lists "Lahore Frames: The Animation Meetup" on August 12 in Lahore, the latest in its recurring series connecting animation and game-art professionals. That follows its FuturePlay 2026 Investor Summit in Karachi, which brought publishers, angel investors, VCs and creative-tech executives together to review 8 startups spanning gaming, 3D animation and immersive media. Context for Pakistani studios watching the Gulf: Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund is one of the most active capital sources in the industry right now (see below) — a reminder that regional publisher/investor relationships are increasingly relevant for Pakistan-based developers looking for growth capital or distribution partners, not just Western VCs.

On the regional competitive scene, VCT 2026: Game Changers South Asia Split 2 (organized by Riot Games and NODWIN Gaming) ran July 5–15 with 8 teams, and an Esports Nations Cup 2026 South & East Asia Dota 2 qualifier ran June 30–July 1 with 4 teams — both part of the steady drumbeat of South Asian competitive gaming that Pakistani teams and organizers plug into. 🌍 Around the industry

Saudi PIF keeps expanding its footprint. The kingdom's Public Investment Fund is backing a $55 billion bid to take Electronic Arts private, and PIF-owned mobile publisher Scopely is separately buying a majority stake in Turkish studio Loom Games in a deal worth up to $1 billion. PIF's Savvy Games Group has now committed roughly $38 billion toward its Vision 2030 goal of developing 30 competitive games and building Saudi Arabia into a global gaming hub. (Fast Company Middle East) For studios anywhere seeking publishing or investment partners, Gulf capital is no longer a side note — it's one of the largest pools of money actively chasing the sector.

Unity leapfrogs Unreal Engine 6 on timing. Unity announced Unity 7 at its Unite Seoul developer conference: a zero-rebuild upgrade path from Unity 6, up to 90% faster shader builds via CoreCLR, realtime global illumination through Surface Cache GI, and free MCP integration for AI tooling. Beta testing starts in December 2026 with a full release targeted for Q1 2027 — putting it roughly a year ahead of Unreal Engine 6's expected Early Access window, a real factor for any studio choosing an engine for its next project. (TechTimes, PC Gamer)

Mobile keeps pulling South Asia forward. The global mobile games market is on track to grow from roughly $148.9B in 2026 to $241.7B by 2031 (10.17% CAGR), and Pakistan's rapid growth as an emerging market — alongside India's rise as the fastest-growing hub in the Asia-MENA region — was specifically flagged as a trend to watch this year. (Mordor Intelligence) That's the segment closest to Pakistan's existing developer strengths in free-to-play and hypercasual mobile titles.

Bottom line, for a slower news week outside the Xbox story: most of this week's global movement was capital reallocating — Gulf money into publishers and studios, VC funding into AdTech and AI tooling — rather than new game announcements. Worth watching whether that capital eventually reaches Pakistan-based studios directly, or continues to flow mainly into larger Western and Turkish/European targets.
